Historic Events in Person and on Screen

August 28 of this month marks the 50th Anniversary of the historic March on Washington, and activities are planned all over the country. In Washington DC, the marching begins on Saturday, August 24, with a commemorative march and rally. The 50th Anniversary March takes place on Wednesday, August 28. President Obama will address the marchers at the Lincoln Memorial, the site where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous, I Have a Dream, speech! In between the two marches, events will be happening throughout the city.                                                                                Click here to learn more about scheduled events.

On August 27, at 8pm, a special about the March on Washington will air on television, on the PBS network.                      Click here for more information.

I remember watching reports from the original March on Washington on television when I was a girl. I have always regretted not going to such a historic event, so I did not want to miss the 50-year anniversary.

I am excited about my trip to our nation’s capital! I will attend the 50th Anniversary March on Washington Conference on Civil Rights on August 27, and will march on the 28th. I hope to fit in visits to a few of the Smithsonian museums, and a stop at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

The Butler, a Lee Daniels film starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, opens on August 16. The film tells the story of an African American butler who worked in the White House for over 30 years and served eight presidents. The civil rights era is featured in the film.                                                                                                                                    Click here for more information.
